School Board Elections This Fall
« on: August 08, 2009, 02:41:39 PM »
I found out last night a few of the names that have picked up petitions to run for the two school board positions up for election this fall.

Ian Watson and Steven Hughes will be running again for their positions, also Paula Barone is planning to campaign.

Freshwater supporters, Steve Thompson and Darcy (Myron) Miller have also picked up petitions.    Three add'l candidates planning to complete petitions that I think may be Freshwater supporters but am not absolutely positive are Robert Kirk, Chip Street and Joshua Kirby.  There may be more but I will need to check further on Monday.

I will certainly have lots of questions for any candidate running.  What I don't want to see are candidates with singular narrow agendas (i.e. getting JF's job back, making their religious agenda more important than anyone elses).   There are a lot of issues facing our schools right now.  Mr. Freshwater's issue may be the most financially costly to the district but there are other issues which are far more important to the education of the children of our city.

Before you vote this year, make sure you know exactly what the agenda is of each candidate.

Maybe this is why Freshwater is stalling the hearing.......

Thom Collier is a Freshwater supporter, Joshua Kirby is a Collier supporter. So I guess your assumption is probably correct about Joshua Kirby as seen in this article on the blog.

"Collier was supported at his announcement speech by several area businesspeople, including Ariel CEO Karen Buchwald-Wright, insurance agent Joshua Kirby and real estate broker Dave Culbertson, who introduced the candidate as having garnered endorsements in the past by the National Federation of Independent Businesses and the Ohio Chamber of Commerce."

Yes, I believe that he homeschooled her during the year that she had Freshwater for a teacher in science.  I don't remember what the requirement is but she did take attend the needed number of classes at school so that she could participate in sports.

Well I've seen Robert Kirk's notice of running as well as Steve Thompson's.  I'm really concerned that their main reason for running is so that they can rehire Freshwater.

Imagine, I agree with you that the reason R. Kelly Hamilton might be stalling the hearing is to see what happens in the upcoming school board election.

I question Mr. Thompson's insinuation that our school district runs in a $3 million deficit.  I'll need to follow up with this on Monday.  If the district is that far in the hole, there would need to be some pretty drastic cuts within the schools or taxes would need to be increased to fix that big of a debt.

Hopefully, the candidates will be available for the public to ask questions, because I certainly have a few for the candidates who are primarily running to rehire Freshwater.

Would there be any issues with Freshwaters license to teach? I really haven't followed the neverending case that much. I was trying to hold out for the movie! Would his being fired with cause bar him from being rehired? I have not searched much on it. I could only find references that it "may" harm the license.

So I take it that there is support for electing someone that will rehire him?

Sure does seem to be the plan.   Thompson sits
          on the raise-money-for-the-F-defense-board.

I would guess, we've, already spent over 3 million in tax money on the Freshwater thing.  Who ever will end the mess, gets my vote.

It my understanding, that the school board spent, in excess of 200,000 dollars before school start.  Bring in lawyers, to tell the teachers what they can and can not teach or what they can or can not say.  Does anyone know any more about that?
