It looks like Mr. Hughes and Mr. Watson tried too and suceeded to coverup, some type of dishonesty. There is no way that I could ever vote for another pair of coverup artists. Thanks for the web site.
Paula Barone, school board candidate, followed up with me yesterday regarding my question concerning the use of the Nazarene Church for the KCCC graduation. She provided me with two websiteswww.firstamendmentcenter.org This website is operated by Vanderbilt University. www.adl.org/religion_ps_2004/expression.asp This website is the site of the Anti-Defamation League. I appreciated that she did the additional research to help clarify this for me. These websites are full of important information that our school board members, teachers and administrators should be aware of.She also provided me this website were you can download the Public Schools & Religious Communities, A First Amendment Guide by going to this website:http://www.freedomforum.org/templates/document.asp?documentID=13613I decided to peruse the First Amendment website and found the following:Muslim teen sues over graduation held at church http://www.firstamendmentcenter.org/news.aspx?id=18274Wis. students sue to halt graduations in church http://www.firstamendmentcenter.org/news.aspx?id=21520I think it's important to know that while this may not be an issue in our community at present, it could become another potential problem so my question was certainly not out of line.Another interesting link I found on this site was a brochure on Student Religious Expression in Public Schools: United States Department of Education Guidelines.http://www.freedomforum.org/publications/first/findingcommonground/B10.USDeptGuidelines.pdfAnother article on Teachers' Religious Liberties was quite interesting and might be helpful to the teachers that Mr. Thompson indicated on Tuesday were "still scratching their heads" about what they can and can't do.http://www.firstamendmentcenter.org/rel_liberty/publicschools/topic.aspx?topic=teachers_libertiesThere is also A Teacher's Guide to Religion in the Public Schools link but that link was bringing up an error for me this morning. Will try it later.I take issue with Mr. Thompson's statement that teachers are still confused. If they are, there are plenty of places that they can educate themselves regarding 1st Amendment issues. After all, teachers should know how to learn.I appreciate that Mrs. Barone was willing to take the time to locate this valuable information for me so that I could share it with everyone else.
...I think what Thompson was referring when he said..teachers are confused...is that POLICY is not clear for the teachers to know..what is or is not allowed and within legal boundries.
MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Education Association recently joined with the school board and school district officials in sponsoring a “religion in the curriculum” policy review at its start-of-the-year staff inservices. “MVEA thinks it is important that the staff be informed about board policy and the laws regarding religion in the classroom,” said MVEA president Karen Seward. To that end, an Ohio Education Association attorney and the board’s attorney were present to provide information and to answer questions. Steve Short, superintendent of schools, said the session was held not to talk about “the issues that are out there currently,” but to review religion in the curriculum in general. He said both attorneys spoke and gave their opinions about things that could or could not be done in the classroom. All of the relevant bylaws, policies and administrative guidelines have been in effect at least since 2003, and all are based on the United States Constitution, the Ohio Revised Code and/or directives from the U.S. Department of Education. A brief summary follows.
I’ve uploaded the video of Paula Barone from when she spoke at the August 4, 2008 school board meeting. I had originally left her comments off YouTube due to a portion of her comments being retracted—but since she is now a candidate for the board her comments are of more importance than they might have seemed last summer.Paula Barone August 4, 2008 at the Mount Vernon School Board Meeting
(Cross posted from KnoxPages)Thank you, mountvernon1805, for recovering Paula's comments from that meeting. I was never prouder of my wife than I was that evening as she so articulately stated the case for religion-neutral classrooms in our public schools.I was, of course, disappointed that I had misidentified Mr. XXXX (I don't want to unfairly name him again) to her as the individual who had approached me at the previous board meeting. But as you noted, I immediately rose to apologize to Paula, and to Mr. XXXXX, for MY mistaking his identity. Ironically, the Minuteman member who had made the comments to me WAS in the audience that night, but made no attempt to take ownership of them. I thought that particularly cowardly on his part.Nevertheless, thank you again mountvernon 1805 for making available to everyone Paula's comments from that evening. I believe hearing them (despite MY regretable error) will help Mount Vernon School District voters understand why the school board needs someone of her integrity, clear thinking and, above all, respect for all Mount Vernon students.-- Sam BaroneQuote from: mountvernon1805 on October 17, 2009, 01:07:05 PMI%u2019ve uploaded the video of Paula Barone from when she spoke at the August 4, 2008 school board meeting.
