It looks like Mr. Hughes and Mr. Watson tried too and suceeded to coverup, some type of dishonesty.  There is no way that I could ever vote for another pair of coverup artists.

Thanks for the web site.

I felt as you did and went off half-cocked as you are in "assuming" that there was a "cover up" by the Board........

I researched, dug, pulled public records and talked to everyone who would discuss this issue to try to get to the truth........

At the end of the day, I discovered that the "strong arming" wasn't on the part of the Board at all....and I do have a copy of their Settlement Agreement.....

I won't post unsubstantiated facts that were shared - I won't post about any local issues without public record support - but I can assure you that you are very, very wrong about what happened in this matter -- although I "think" that you're looking for an excuse to not vote for any of the present Board Members, and feel the Hashack matter provides you one - you're wrong - it doesn't

Doesn't matter if you believe me or not.........do your own research, question, pull records, and stop "assuming"

You might get to the truth.......if it's the truth you seek, anyway - not excuses

well it is easy to see you dont know facts..but go by rumors....even CM took time to find the "facts"..I suggest you do the same..reseach before suggesting there is something hidden or claim someone to be a coverup artist...sad sad...the knox grapevine is at work again...and NO FACTS  as usaual.

Paula Barone, school board candidate, followed up with me yesterday regarding my question concerning the use of the Nazarene Church for the KCCC graduation.  She provided me with two websites

www.firstamendmentcenter.org   This website is operated by Vanderbilt University.

www.adl.org/religion_ps_2004/expression.asp  This website is the site of the Anti-Defamation League.

I appreciated that she did the additional research to help clarify this for me.  These websites are full of important information that our school board members, teachers and administrators should be aware of.

She also provided me this website were you can download the Public Schools & Religious Communities, A First Amendment Guide by going to this website:

http://www.freedomforum.org/templates/document.asp?documentID=13613

I decided to peruse the First Amendment website and found the following:

Muslim teen sues over graduation held at church

http://www.firstamendmentcenter.org/news.aspx?id=18274

Wis. students sue to halt graduations in church

http://www.firstamendmentcenter.org/news.aspx?id=21520

I think it's important to know that while this may not be an issue in our community at present, it could become another potential problem so my question was certainly not out of line.

Another interesting link I found on this site was a brochure on Student Religious Expression in Public Schools:  United States Department of Education Guidelines.

http://www.freedomforum.org/publications/first/findingcommonground/B10.USDeptGuidelines.pdf

Another article on Teachers' Religious Liberties was quite interesting and might be helpful to the teachers that Mr. Thompson indicated on Tuesday were "still scratching their heads" about what they can and can't do.

http://www.firstamendmentcenter.org/rel_liberty/publicschools/topic.aspx?topic=teachers_liberties

There is also A Teacher's Guide to Religion in the Public Schools link but that link was bringing up an error for me this morning.  Will try it later.

I take issue with Mr. Thompson's statement that teachers are still confused.  If they are, there are plenty of places that they can educate themselves regarding 1st Amendment issues.  After all, teachers should know how to learn.

I appreciate that Mrs. Barone was willing to take the time to locate this valuable information for me so that I could share it with everyone else.

These resources are excellent.  Thanks for sharing
them with us, Seabiscuit.   And thanks to Mrs. Barone.

...I think what Thompson was referring when
he said..teachers are confused...is that POLICY
is not clear for the teachers to know..what is
or is not allowed and within legal boundries.

This was taken care of by the teaching staff
of MVSD quite a few months ago.

They chose to devout their entire inservice day
to reviewing legal rights and responsibilities -
          teachers and students and parents.

The attorney for the school board and the attorney
for the Ohio Education Association (teachers' union)
presented.   It was a day of revisiting the contract
and the legal aspects of education.  The day brought
          questions and answers.

At the day's end, there was no confusion.

Okay, CM, I'll bite.  Where and how did you get this information?  How do we, go about getting the same information?  I'm interested in the truth and facts.  If you can't come up with truth and facts, I've had enough smoke blown up my rectum for one day.

Today's MVNews has an entire separate
               section ~

                         The Ballot 2009

It is 12 pages covering the local candidates
running for an office - Mount Vernon, Fredericktown,
               Gambier, Utica, Martinsburg, Centerburg, Danville,
the townships, etc., including local issues up for
               a vote.

Candidates had the opportunity to respond to the
set of questions with their own views.

It's a good product and a good read.

(I wanted to post a link here for everyone,
but was not able to find this posted on the
MVNews website.  It may appear later.)

MV schools reviews policy on religion in classroom

            August 25, 2009

            MVNews

Quote

MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Education
Association recently joined with the school board
and school district officials in sponsoring a “religion
in the curriculum” policy review at its start-of-the-year
            staff inservices.

“MVEA thinks it is important that the staff be informed
about board policy and the laws regarding religion in
the classroom,” said MVEA president Karen Seward.

To that end, an Ohio Education Association attorney
and the board’s attorney were present to provide
             information and to answer questions.

Steve Short, superintendent of schools, said the
session was held not to talk about “the issues that
are out there currently,” but to review religion in
the curriculum in general. He said both attorneys
spoke and gave their opinions about things that
could or could not be done in the classroom.

All of the relevant bylaws, policies and administrative
guidelines have been in effect at least since 2003,
and all are based on the United States Constitution,
the Ohio Revised Code and/or directives from the
             U.S. Department of Education.

             A brief summary follows.

I’ve uploaded the video of Paula Barone from when she spoke at the August 4, 2008 school board meeting.

I had originally left her comments off YouTube due to a portion of her comments being retracted—but since she is now a candidate for the board her comments are of more importance than they might have seemed last summer.

Thank you, mountvernon1805, for recovering Paula's comments from that meeting. I was never prouder of my wife than I was that evening as she so articulately stated the case for religion-neutral classrooms in our public schools.

I was, of course, disappointed that I had misidentified Mr. XXXX (I don't want to unfairly name him again) to her as the individual who had approached me at the previous board meeting. But as you noted, I immediately rose to apologize to Paula, and to Mr. XXXXX, for MY mistaking his identity. Ironically, the Minuteman member who had made the comments to me WAS in the audience that night, but made no attempt to take ownership of them. I thought that particularly cowardly on his part.

Nevertheless, thank you again mountvernon 1805 for making available to everyone Paula's comments from that evening. I believe hearing them (despite MY regretable error) will help Mount Vernon School District voters understand why the school board needs someone of her integrity, clear thinking and, above all, respect for all Mount Vernon students.

Nice!

That's what I'm talking about folks. The man jumped in a set the record straight!
Thank you Sam.

I liked what she had to say as well mistake notwithstanding. She was right on the money about teaching religion in public school. I still feel a bible on a desk is not a firing offense nor should it be banned. That however is a constitutional argument that is not served well to be discussed here.
"demagoguery is a strategy for gaining political power by appealing to the prejudices, emotions, fears and expectations of the public -typically via impassioned rhetoric and propaganda, and often using nationalist, populist or religious themes.
