Flying Scotsman Bobby Thompson Flies Home
« on: August 17, 2010, 05:18:13 PM »
1951 Pennant Hero Bobby Thompson, also known as the Flying Scotsman, has flown home to his heavenly father. He died peacefully at his home last night at the age of 86. Thompson hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning during the third game of the 1951 pennant race between the Dodgers and the Giants. His home run let the Giants not only win the pennant but beat the Dodgers at it, which was a huge deal because of the enormous rivalry between the teams. Just to illustrate the rivalry, when Jackie Robinson got traded from the Dodgers to the Giants, he retired from baseball rather than play for the “enemy.”

Giant fans everywhere revered Bobby Thompson, and his ninth-inning hit has been called “The Shot Heard Round the World.” It was a really big deal back then, and would be the same today. Rest in peace Bobby Thompson.

And yet not in the Hall of Fame.   Despite several years on the All Stars and being in the top 4 or 5 players almost every year, he does not get into the Hall of Fame.   Seems very strange to me - and he was a good guy as well - no gambling or betting on the games.
