Sitting out a Year
« on: July 11, 2010, 03:28:43 PM »
BTW, do you even know why they started the act of "sitting out a year"? I do as my kids were playing sports before this happened, but I'm curious if you know. It does have to do with NC alot and their "recruitment" and other schools starting to do the same thing.

I will address this but not on this topic as it has nothing to do with this and not right now because I need to be somewhere soon.  I just wanted to let you know that I'm not ignoring you and will comment on this later.

Mods.........can you break this away from the Freshwater topic and give it it's "own life" (lol!).

This is so interesting, in reference to seabiscuit, . FYI, they do still recruit students in football programs! I have no clue who is feeding you information, but you are totally misguided! :holysheep:

I know they do as my son was recruited by NC. He didn't go, wanted to stay with his friends, but he WAS recruited.

LOL..of course the coaches recruit players in high school.  They do it in every sport.  The summer league programs is where the "action takes place"...where high school coaches are exposed to kids from other schools.

Anyone who doesn;t think this is true is not paying attention, or simply has no clue

Yep, they sure do. Like I said, my hubby coached for over 20 years between the two different age groups we had. Been through it both times around.

Also, in regards to the 'sitting out period'. My son help coach for Danville Blue Devils, he informed me that some coaches do this so they can train the guys in the weight room for the year. He does not like  this method himself. Colleges usually register their students and they normally sit out for the first year. This is what my son informed me. He is a graduate of OSU!

Sports are getting to much into the money and not about playing the game ,because the player loves the sport. That said Pro ballers of all sorts are extremly paid to much. and there is to much competion to play on a level field. I`m sure there are many players out there that can play just as well as the ones makin the big money. They just haven`t had the right oportunity. It`s all about the money

The reason for the sitting out period started back when kids were going from school to school, depending on their sport. We had kids that would "transfer" to one school for, let's say, football. Then when basketball came around, they would go back to their own original school. So open enrollement opened up a can of worms that the atheletic dpts weren't sure how to handle at first. So now, you can open enroll, but if you play a sport, you sit out a year to make sure that you're going to that school for academics and not to get more playing time or to be a "big star" at that particular school.

Colleges do it because you only have 4 years of eligibility to play and if you're a five year student, which most are these days if they play sports, you sit a year so as to only get your 4 years in. Colleges call it "red shirting", but it doesn't necessarily have to be your freshman year. There are those who start as a true freshman, get hurt a year and stay red shirted that year so that they don't use it as part of their eligibility. I know, my son started his freshman year, got hurt his sophomore year and sat out, then played his junior, junior and 1/2 (not sure what to call it) and senior year.

My son had to sit out a year d/t concussions from football. When he played in middle school he suffered from a lacerated spleen. that was in 1994 . He was in critical condition.
