MYFOXNY.COM - George Steinbrenner has died, Fox 5 News reported Tuesday morning, citing an AP report.

Steinbrenner had reportedly suffered a massive heart attack.  The owner of the New York Yankees was taken to a Tampa's St. Joseph's hospital late Monday night.

"The Boss" as he was known in Yankee circles, bought the team in 1973.  The Bronx Bombers have won seven World Series titles since he became the principal owner.

George Steinbrenner celebrated his 80th birthdayon July 4th.

He said he was "feeling good" after spending a couple hours Friday in his office at the Yankees' spring training complex in Florida.

Steinbrenner has had recent health problems.

He stepped aside in recent years and his sons, Hal and Hank, have taken more responsibility in running the team.

On Sunday, after the passing of long time statdium announcer Bob Sheppard, George Steinbrenner issued a statement saying Sheppard was "the gold standard."

"Fans were thrilled to hear his unforgettable voice and players were thrilled to hear his majestic enunciation of their names," he said.  "My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Mary, and their family."

The Yankees had not posted any information about Steinbrenner on their official site on Tuesday morning.

Wow, I had just heard that he had a heart attack on the news not more than 20 minutes ago.

I was going to say the same thing. The radio said this morning he was in the hospital. At least he didn't have to suffer long.

Love him or hate him, you knew he was there, nothing boring about the way he did business...
you have to wonder if Billy Martin was around to greet him.
No, my powers can only be used for good.

And Billy will be kicking the sand around home plate, so George will feel right at home.

As a fan of the Yankees, how could you not love the guy?  He spent whatever it took to field a consistent winner, and although many thought his lavish spending sprees hurt the sport, he was well within the rules.  His outbursts and boisterous personality made the headlines, but George had another side to him, as he gave away millions and do so anonymously.  Baseball will miss him.
I'd rather slam my nose in a car door. I'd rather have a proctologist named Dr. Hook. I would rather watch Roseanne Barr do a striptease than give up my MVOhio.
