Here's a neat trick.  The link to the tutorial is below (yup, I wrote it).

(If you click on my name - Jakaleena - at the top of the page it will take you to a list of other tutorials I wrote for that site.  I wrote them for PS 5.5, but most should translate to newer versions or PSE without much trouble.  I just used PSE 8 to do the Knox County poster).

Here's an example of the same technique used in my design for the Fredericktown Community Development Foundation earlier this year.

My point being - there are generally uses for most of these "neato" tricks so it doesn't hurt to learn how to do them.
