It is usual for kids to transfer from school districts in the summer and 4 transfers is hardly an epidemic....If the Dennis family fled to escape the " religious atmosphere " of the mount vernon school system, goodbye to godless heathens......how are we to know if this " wave " of transfers is not the result of the Obama economy ?... :runaway:

I agree that kids do transfer to other school districts and that 4 is hardly an epidemic.  My reference was that I now know personally 4 families within my circle of acquaintances in just the last couple of months.  That's not happened before.  I have no idea how many students in total are transferring out of the local school but I'm hearing more and more from people who are thinking about doing the same.   I think the fact that interest in leaving is increasing is noteworthy.

Perhaps some of the reason they are leaving also has to do with sports. I know in our area, we have kids transfer in all the time because at their "old school" maybe their kids didn't get the "playing time" the parents thought they should. So they transfer to a smaller school with the hopes that they don't have all that "competition" and can get more playing time. I know of several families who have done that here. I know that they're are some who have done that for Newark Catholic and when they didn't get the "playing time" they went back to their home school.
Transfers happen for a variety of reasons, not just religious reasons. Just saying..............

I would like to add that Private schools are known to recruit students for their sports programs. Its been going on for years! It boosts their school image.

Private schools don't have to recruit students.  They develop good programs and the students and families that want what they have to offer, come of their own accord.  And I know this is a fruitless argument with you and others who believe your thought that they do.   As someone who sends my kids to a private school, I have watched kids with lesser athletic talent than those at the Public schools achieve more from their performance because of the coaching they receive at the private schools.   Students can transfer from private schools without consequence to their playing time (sitting out a year) that often does occur when a student from a public school transfers to a private school.    Good athletes sometimes leave private schools because their parents can no longer afford the tuition.  Believe me, if there was recruiting you'd never see that happen.  But I know you will argue differently.

Now the kids I'm talking about in my statement are all transferring to another public school, not a private one.

Oh boy, that's so full of bullshit I don't know where to start. Coming from someone who's kids played in just about every sport and was very good at it, I KNOW for a fact that there are kids at NC that were recruited, especially for the three major sports, football, baseball, and basketball. I've heard the discussions from the baseball coach Cantazera (sp) as he also rounded up the Newark Babe Ruth program and my husband coached down there. We got to know quite a few of the parents from not only NC, but from the other schools such as North Fork, Lakewood, Licking Valley. So I KNOW this one for sure. When JD Graham coached NC football, it was one of his priorities to "recruit" football players. I've been involved in too many sports and functions to believe what you say as I know it for a fact.

Writing as a mod of this forum, the "do private schools recruit?" sidetrack is a significant derail.  If you folks want to discuss that question please take it elsewhere.  Otherwise it'll be moved.

It got "sidetracked" because of this bullshit statement from Sea,,," What is incredibly amazing is that I'm learning that there is an increasing amount of parents transferring their children out of the Mt. Vernon school district.  I just recently learned of 4 more that are transferring their kids to other school districts and a few more that are seriously thinking about moving so their children don't attend MTV.   They have grown tired of the problems that exist at MTV and the lack of action taken by administrators.  They don't want to find themselves in the Dennis's shoes so they are getting "the h**l out of Dodge", so to speak.

As though that is the only reason people would "transfer" their kid out of MTV.

Let's be real about it.

Have you seen how many fat kids go to MTV schools?????  Dang....

I agree with armymom, the transferring of students (mass exodus) points to a real problem with the schools, that problem is reflected by the $700,000 + wasted on the "John The Teacher" witch hunt..(money that could have gone to important stuff like sports equipment so the kids can plan to get into the NFL and NBA as a career path)

This is very much germane to the thread...(clockstopper, germane means relevant and appropriate)

Sorry ClockStopper:

I had already requested the split from this topic which was done by Imagine way before your post.   It probably would've helped to have moved more of the posts than he did so that this didn't continue on here.

It wasn't my intent to suggest that there aren't a variety of reasons why students are leaving MTV schools.  My point was that there are enough "problems" in a variety of areas that more and more families are chosing to move their children out of the MTV schools particularly once they get into Junior High and High School.

I say that because when we made that choice (to leave the local district) most of the people in our "circle of acquaintances" thought that our decision was a bit extreme.  Now I'm seeing more and more of them make the same decision because of problems they are seeing throughout the district (i.e. problem with teachers and non-response from administration).  That was my point.  It was not to suggest that these students were leaving solely for religious reasons related to the Freshwater situation.

If the amount of for sale signs are any indication in any community, somebody is going somewhere, everywhere.  Stores with 'will lease', a 'for sale' on every other front lawn, and food lines are getting longer.   The only prosperity I've noticed is the first of the month at Walmart, KMart, Krogers, etc.   Don't come into town on the first of the month.

There are numerous reasons to leave the county, but I venture to say, it's the same reason other counties are also having an exodus.   The least, imho, are the schools.  All schools are crying the blues.

Saw this on a sign:

You are missing the most critical element SDB..."sold" signs are not around...already "leased" and "coming soon" are not around...folks are trying to get out from under their financial anchors...then...if they can...they are looking for some other place to "land"..

There is a desire for mass exodus...from everywhere...but there are no buyers....only despair, desperation, and decay....
